About Cap City

The Capital City Marching Festival is a first-class marching band competition that provides an opportunity for high school bands and directors to perform their UIL contest show in front of a large, appreciative audience. The friendly environment encourages marching band students to prepare for their competitions to follow. The LBJ Band Boosters and Crockett Band Boosters sponsor the festival.  The Capital City Festival venue continues to be the Toney Burger Center Stadium, which is outfitted with all-weather, artifical turf; Burger Stadium is located in southwest Austin.

Capital City strives to provide the best judging experts in the marching band field. Four adjudicators are assigned the captions: Music, Percussion Ensemble, Visual Ensemble, and Colorguard. The 100-point judging system begins at zero and the entire band, including colorguard and percussion, is awarded points for proficiency and technical ability in two areas: music and visual effects. Within these two elements of each program, the qualities of technique, execution, performance, and effectiveness are evaluated. Each band is considered on its own merit for style, theme, and approach.  Band classification is based on the number of woodwinds & brass in the band.

The Crockett and LBJ band boosters are dedicated to offering each band program a fabulous state-of-the-art marching band experience. The Capital City Festival celebrated its 17th year last season with 25 bands performing.  This year’s festival, scheduled for October 2, 2010, promises to be another terrific event.

For each of the four classes, trophies are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Special trophies are also awarded in each class for the top two percussion sections, and the top two colorguard units.  Two overall festival trophies are awarded: one to the band (of all classes) chosen by the judges as “the best musical performance” and “the best general effect”.
